These converters are characterized by the presence of a digital microcontroller that is able to “manage” the photovoltaic power but also to assure the execution of ancillary services such as monitoring, diagnostics, communication and so on. In this context, the efficiency of PV technologies can be improved by the introduction of a smart maximum power point (SMPPT) converter that is able to maximize each photovoltaic generator power by tracking its Maximum Power Point by real-time impedance matching. In new scenarios (microgrids and Net Zero Energy Buildings), PV systems become energetic and information “nodes” of the grid. With the introduction of digital technologies, a new role emerges for these systems. Nowadays, photovoltaic (PV) systems are wide and capillary distributed.
